James Caan est né le 26 mars 1940 dans le quartier du Bronx à New York au sein d'une famille juive d'origine allemande. Il grandit dans le quartier de Sunnyside dans le Queens, auprès de sa sœur et de son frère.
Il étudie à l'université d'État du Michigan puis à l'Université Hofstra.
Durant son adolescence, il s'est investi dans la production de groupes vocaux locaux tels que les Embers (pas d'enregistrements sortis, uniquement des démos réalisées au studio Adlphi de New York).
