Biographie de Ray Bolger

Ray Bolger a débuté sa carrière dans le vaudeville. Il formait avec son partenaire le duo « Sanford et Bolger » et s'est également produit en solo dans de nombreux spectacles de Broadway. À l'instar de Gene Kelly, il était à la fois chanteur, danseur et acteur. En 1936, il signe un contrat avec la MGM et son premier rôle est celui de son propre personnage dans *The Great Ziegfeld* (1936). Il obtient rapidement un rôle aux côtés d'Eleanor Powell dans *Rosalie* (1937). Son premier rôle de danseur et de chanteur est dans *Sweethearts* (1938), où il interprète le numéro des « chaussons de bois » avec la soprano rousse Jeanette MacDonald. Remarqué par les producteurs de la MGM, il décroche son rôle le plus célèbre : celui de l'Épouvantail dans *Le Magicien d'Oz* (1939). Contre toute attente, malgré le succès du film, son contrat avec la MGM prend fin. Il rejoint alors la RKO pour tourner *Four Jacks and a Jill* (1942). Après cela, Bolger se rendit à Broadway, où il connut son plus grand succès. En 1953, il se tourna vers la télévision et obtint sa propre sitcom, « Where's Raymond?» (1953), rebaptisée plus tard « The Ray Bolger Show ». Après la fin de sa série, Bolger fit de fréquentes apparitions à la télévision et obtint quelques petits rôles au cinéma. En 1985, il co-anima l'émission « That's Dancing!» (1985) avec Liza Minnelli. Bolger mourut en 1987 à l'âge de 83 ans. Il est inhumé au cimetière Holy Cross de Culver City, en Californie, aux États-Unis, dans le mausolée, crypte F2, bloc 35.
