Connu pour son humour mordant, il débute comme stand-up comedian avant de se tourner vers la télévision. Il incarne le détective John Munch dans New York, unité spéciale (1999-2016), un rôle qu’il reprend dans Homicide (1993-1999) et d’autres séries, faisant de Munch un personnage culte. Belzer apparaît aussi dans des films comme Scarface (1983) et Fame (1980). Auteur de livres sur les théories du complot, il mêle esprit caustique et engagement.
